The bullet train is only economically feasible in densely populated country like China. Many routes in China are profitable. Our good air service will be still the preferred.
Who is going to work to lay down rail in tough conditions? It is easy to collect welfare unless we hire the illegal Mexicans (yes, the legals would collect welfare).
Another hurdle is politics: If the idea is not generated from my party, it HAS to be no good. The best train today at the lowest cost is from China. You do not want to jack up the trade deficit further, don't you?
How many of you has experienced shooting from outside when riding a train?
The completion date is 2029 for most routes. It is about 11 years away and all the old folks looking for the fast train to Vegas would die before the completion. If they outsourced it to China, it would be done within 2 years!
It is the same big project: over-budgeted and delays with excuses. Almost all big projects are like that starting with our Big Dig in Mass.
