Coronavirus

As of 3/28/2020, more than 30,000 have died of this disease. There will be impact to the global economies. The U.S. pledged 2 trillion rescue money and it would affect her economy adversely in the long term. The root cause has not been found and there is a good chance it may never be found. There are rumors and some are belong to the conspiracy theories:

Causes

·         Caused by Chinese eating game food. It is likely but there is no concrete proof so far. An Indian scientist said that it was almost impossible.

·         A YouTube video indicates it was caused by two Chinese scientists stole the virus and it was escaped from the lab in Wuhan. Seems a rumor fabricated in U.S. It is denied by several prestigious organizations and articles.

·         There are many rumors spread around the internet that the virus was spread intentionally or un-intentionally from U.S. Some concluded that it was more powerful than tariff in a trade war. They listed a lot of coincident and reasons. The virus broke out shortly after the Wuhan’s military Olympics. The U.S. athletes did not win a gold this time and only this time. What did these athletes do? It is not likely.

The outbreak is in Wuhan but we cannot conclude where the source is. I wonder whether some of the substantially increased deaths from flu this year are actually caused by this virus. So far and according to some unproven sources, China has 3G (generation) of this virus while U.S. has 1G to 5G. The first patient so far is a female U.S. soldier attending the sports event in Wuhan.

China and many other countries will take preventive actions such as limiting eating games. China should also set up an organization such as CDC to speed up the warning without waiting for Beijing’s decision to publicize.

U.S. should have more preventive measures such as building up inventories for the masks, ventilation machines, covering hoods and the manufacturing capacities of them. When we have enough masks, the public should use them routinely especially the sick ones similar to many citizens in Asian countries. The drug / vaccine researches have responded very fast from the virus genome provided by China. However, they should take more than 6 months to be ready for general public.

The good sides

The current generation of Japanese are educated, polite, generous and civilized. Translated the following broadcast from a Japanese TV:

The Japanese special plane will fly to Wuhan tomorrow to pick up the Japanese who are stranded in Hubei province, especially Wuhan city. The plane is not empty; it will fly to Wuhan with relief supplies to Wuhan. The medical team of 1,000 people will also be sent to Wuhan, compared to South Korean petition to stop Chinese tourists from entering, Taiwanese refused to export the mouth masks to China, the Philippines deported Chinese tourists, and North Korea banned Chinese people from entering. The Japanese government quickly recruit factories, overtime making masks, etc.

Now the streets of Tokyo and Osaka are full of cheers for Wuhan. I hope that our fellow compatriots will remember this scene. No matter where disaster encounters, be considerate and helpful with actions. Love has no boundaries in race or country! I can forgive them for the terrible deeds to China during WW2. This generation of Japan has nothing to do with the war.

The bad side

There are at least two ‘famous internet posters’ in Hong Kong posting YouTube videos against the Hong Kong government aggressively every day. They must be financed and/or they are Chinese bashers. No matter what nationality you are, you should be proud of your country especially during a disaster.

China has gained points in building two hospitals in less than 12 days. For them the hospital is a death concentration camp. How ridiculous! They oppose everything the Hong Kong government and China do for no reasons.

Some doctors and nurses in Hong Kong wanted a strike if their political points were not approved by the government. They forget why they wanted to go to this sacred professional. I saw many taking this opportunity to promote their political views. It is a disaster and these political views have OPPOSITE effects to me.  What happens if they themselves or their family members have this virus? To me, they should go to the lowest level of hell.

Globalization and just-in-time inventory are popular in the last 20 years. With this virus, the destruction of global economies is huge. For example, Apple’s iPhone could need parts from more than 10 countries and few has stored enough inventory to last for months. The U.S. has the highest rate of casualties for this disease. It could be due to initially not identify the patients. Companies do not provide enough masks as they are not profitable when the virus is suppressed. It should be solved by the government such as maintaining factories and inventory.

We should learn lessons from this outbreak. In this case, China’s authoritarian government works better than our system. We would face a lot of opposition to close a city to start. We should maintain some manufacturing such as producing masks and do not depend on a sole country such as China for some medical ingredients and / or keep adequate inventory for the real national security. We should depend on the opinions of the experts (CDC in this case). I knew this outbreak in China at least a week before the U.S. public but I did not act on it due to my emotion. I should wear two hats: one as a human being and one as an investor. China controls this virus better than most countries. China’s sending medical supplies and medical folks to Italy improves her prestige a lot (as opposed to sending soldiers). The world should have no border.

We do not want to follow China’s model of fighting this virus and do not want to accept aids from China. Is our face more important than our citizens’ lives?

U.S. demonizes China and calls it Chinese virus while China did not do the same on U.S.’s H1N1 in 2009. A tale of two countries! Trump has been playing political game on this virus. There is no president not reelected when the unemployment is 4% or less. However, the unemployment is rising very fast. NY Governor Cuomo faces reality and has been doing a great job. Xi advises the world to be co-operative to fight this virus. We need to listen more to the experts and particularly those in WHO.

Updates

·         3/27/2020. From the YouTube videos (most made by Chinese citizens), China is recovering nicely. Most new cases are from foreigners entering the country and / or folks hiding their infection. Most citizens are wearing masks. Most of us in U.S. do not have masks and that’s why we should not venture out of the house unless it is necessary. China should have preventive measures on the possible second wave of this virus when the factories and social events are returning to normal. There is no reason to fight for toilet paper as we have the factories and the raw material here in the U.S.

Self help to Coronavirus

First, I am not a medical professional. Follow the advice of your doctor before taking any actions. The following is circulated to me by an unknown translator and an unknown author to me.

Trump is playing politics. As of 3/28/2020, I do not expect returning to work by Easter. If we do, the problem will be even worse esp. without wearing masks. We have our ego and politic of not following China's model to fight this virus. In China and many Asian countries, most citizens wear mask.

The death rate of citizens over 65 is exponentially high and this age group should not leave their houses unless critically necessary.

Worth reading.

This is a message from Professor Wong Kin-Chung, a medical professor in USA, to his students in a chat group. Very well said. (Translator Alice’s note: the original message was in Chinese, I am translating this for the benefit of my non-Chinese reading family and friends residing overseas. With apologies to Professor Wong, I have made some editorial changes while not affecting the meaning of the original message.)

Now ......there are lots of suspected and confirmed cases (of coronavirus) where the patients cannot be admitted into hospital. This is understandable. It is simply not possible for any city in normal times to build and maintain so many infectious disease hospitals and hospital beds, and to have so many qualified infectious disease control medical staff to be on stand-by.

In reality, even if you go into hospital, they do not have any special treatment that target (the coronavirus), they only offer supportive therapy. It won’t help to get frustrated if you can’t get into hospital. Do as I say below. It would help delay the progress of your condition, while waiting for admission.

I have been a doctor as well as a nutritionist for decades. My method is scientifically based. Please feel free to circulate my message to your other chat groups, my advice may help people who find themselves in the situations I describe.

I am not recommending self-healing, only to use everyday actions to buy time.... to improve one’s general health condition while waiting for hospital admission.

1. Patients’ family members, on entering and leaving home, should rinse their mouths with salted water, using cold water, not hot. Cold water will contract blood vessels in one’s mouth and throat, thereby reducing chances of viruses entering one’s blood stream. Salted water can stabilize the s-protein on the virus’ surface, making it less easy to attach to the mucous membranes. To enter human bodies, the coronavirus first has to bind itself to certain specific proteins in the membrane and then self-multiply massively. So rinse your mouth frequently, it will be even better if you use mouth rinse that contains alcohol.

2. If you have been tested positive but cannot be hospitalized, your only option is to self-isolate at home (in a room by yourself), wearing a mask all the time. Family members must also wear masks at all times. So long as there is no transmission via droplets, transmission of the virus is unlikely. Clean your house using 75% alcohol, clean every corner and even the furniture. Alcohol kills this virus. As does high heat, so use hot water of over 60 degrees to wash your clothes. This virus cannot survive heat above 60 degrees. For shoes or clothes that can’t be washed in hot water above 60 degrees, clean them with disinfectant.

3. Those tested positive but not too unwell, drink lots of water. It doesn’t have to be lots of water each time, a few sips are sufficient. Drink frequently, keep the body hydrated. Garlic, ginger and onions also have properties that help one’s fight against this virus, eat raw or make into drinks to consume. Ginger is best. Make drinks by boiling fresh ginger in water, it will help one’s blood circulation which in turn boosts the immune system. Good immune system is of overriding importance whether or not one gets hospitalized.

4. Hot chicken soup is a common American remedy for colds and flus, which even doctors recommend. Drink more. Go to the pharmacy to buy high dosage Vitamin C, 4000mg daily. Vitamin C affects virus’ self-duplication, and can also stabilize the blood vessels’ outer surface, helping to reduce seepage of infection from the lungs. Drink red wine (not white). Red wine contains polyphenol which acts like hormones to protect tissues against inflammation. This is in line with the treatment recommendations issued by the health authorities in China.

5. Eat more mushrooms. Good mushrooms, like shiitake, contain properties that stimulate the immunity system. The Japanese have done much research in mushrooms. Must soak well before cooking, in order to get rid of any remnants of agricultural insecticides. If you have Lingzhi, that’s even better. Eat good shiitake mushrooms (not the cheap produce). Ginseng and American ginseng are also good for boosting the immune system. Cook with chicken to make soup.

6. Small amount of aspirin (5-20 mg) also helps. Other than being anti- inflammatory, it reduces the viscosity of the blood. Available information suggests that confirmed patients’ blood contains elevated Plasma D-dimer Count, suggesting a higher viscosity and reduced circulation rate. Such is not conducive to healthy regenerative activities of one’s immunity system, but rather favors the virus’ replication. In Chinese medicine, astragalus, codonopsis and American ginseng contain flavonoids, protecting cells from severe damage. Without these, eating soy beans would help.

7. The key is to keep eating (= nourishment). If you have no appetite for solids, liquidize your food. Just eat anything that you fancy. So long as you eat, the problem is manageable. Monitor your urination (translator’s note: = body hydration). You have to pee numerous times a day, in normal quantity.

On ancient Europe

Why Europe is not over-populated? The Crusade started more than a thousand years ago has never been formally ended. The Black Death killed half of the population. Further they did not spoil water at one time and drinking beer instead of water saves many lives finally. My guesses only!

Why Europe is so rich? With less population, the natural resources including farm land is high per capita. In addition, they enslaved and stole all the gold / silver from the colonies. That’s why the countries with sea-faring ports are richer than the rest of Europe. Again my guesses only!

Market timing

It works at least for the last two crashes ending in 2009, but no one can predict the peak and the bottom. I have a simple technique to detect market crashes / recoveries described in most of my books on investing.

One best-seller tells us to exit the market in 2009 and the followers would miss out the 300% or so of appreciation from then to 1/2020. My system is well publicized and it is not my idea; sometimes it is self-prophesized when a lot of investors follow the same technique.

Many predict that a market crash is coming. Even the broken clock is right two times a day. Some become famous when the prediction is materialized and publicized. However, most are one-winner pony.

Representation without taxable

It is worse than taxable without representation. Should we take out the voting rights for those who do not pay any Federal income tax?

Trump

I do not like him as a person without moral. However, he is right in many policies. Being a Chinese American, I even like his China policy. However, it has carried to such an extreme that would backfire in the long term.  Again, I do not vote as I am politically neutral.

Richest folks I bet

More than 5 of the 10 richest folks are Jews or related.

The richest family is Rockefeller, but their wealth has not been publicized. The next one is Walton making money by importing goods from China. Sam Walton miscalculated the profit margins and he was a patriot. After he died, his heirs imported goods from China and the rest is history.

The U.S. middle class have better life than the ancient emperors. So, why you complain?

Prediction of the next president

As of 3/2020, there has not been a president not reelected with the unemployment rate less than 4%. The black swan could be the corona virus. The economy looked better than it actually was as in most presidential election year.

Five Eyes becomes One Eye?

United Kingdom and Canada seems to be letting Huawei in to install the 5G networks. Economy is more important than politics. Canada has massive trade with the U.S., so I do not know the above statement is right. Canada is not in war with any country, so why they care about military intelligence?

Australia has a strong economic tie with China, so most likely they will side with China eventually. They need China more than U.S. for both trade and peace.

The U.S. and China

To my surprise and with the exception of Vietnam, most countries think China is friendlier than the U.S. from the many YouTube videos I watched, and most of these videos were made by Chinese citizens and some by Europeans.

We have been given China a hard time in many fronts, and China will if not already do the same to us. The world will be a better place if the two countries do not fight against each other.

Foxconn and India

Foxconn has a tough time in India. Labor cost and tariff are not the only factors. Other factors are the quality of workers (education and work ethic), infrastructure (electricity and transportation) and governance.

Many factories are moved to Vietnam with similar problems even with the help of China in building their infrastructure. Many basic parts are still made in China and Vietnamese assemble them.

In any case, China will suffer a lot from the trade war with us and the coronavirus.  

Globalization

From the coronavirus outbreak, we find the strengths and weaknesses of globalization. The policy “China plus one” resurfaces. Trump could give negative tariff to some Chinese exports that we need desperately. No kidding!

Endless wars

When you see any of the many YouTube videos on Syria and/or Ukraine, you know what wars have bought. Hope all countries do not participate in foreign wars and let them fix their own problems / conflicts locally to reduce the disastrous effects of wars.

I hope China would solve the islet disputes with her neighbors, and U.S. would let the United Nations to be the global policeman. Am I just a dreamer?
