# Filler: Max. drawdown
‘Max. drawdown’ should be understood for short-term investors. It is the maximum money you can lose. If your tested strategy tells you that you can lose 40% in this strategy, then you should place the stops accordingly. To illustrate, you bought MSFT for $100, and it dipped to $50, your max. drawdown is $50 or 50%. If you use margin, your broker would issue a margin call on its way to the $50 drop. Eventually the stock would recover and hit the $200 mark, and the long-term holders are glad that they did not close the position.
