Tesla and EV

###
As of 8/8/2013, the stock price of TSLA is $155. The performance has been amazing 350% YTD.  It is a stock rocketing higher and higher. If you’re one of those lucky investors, protect your profit with stop orders.
###

Is TSLA a good investment?

From the fundamental metrics, it is not. The expected P/E is 150 and ROE is -360%. I seldom invest on stocks with P/E over 40. However, the outlook of the company is very rosy and the rising stock price indicates it could revolutionize the auto industry. It is possible, but do you want to bet on it?

My preference is “Buy low and sell high” as opposed to the current stock holders’ “Buy high and sell higher”.

Common mistakes of retail investors:

1.       Investing in a company is different from investing in a company’s products. Many Tesla owners own the company’s stock.

2.       Potential appreciation of a stock has nothing to do with its past performance. Will have another 300% return? Most likely, not. If the chance to decrease by $100 the same chance to increase by $50, I do not buy.

3.       When the trend (all three simple moving averages in finviz.com indicates the trend is up), selling short is against you even if you have good argument. Do not swim against the tide especially in short term trade.

4.       Your profession (or expertise) could bring you bias in making investment decisions in a company related to your expertise. I had many high tech friends betting on internet stocks as they ‘knew’ better.

It is similar to your origin of nationality. When you were born in China, it does not mean you’re an expert in Chinese stocks.

The Business Model

Building super charge stations for the current owners to use free after a small initiation fee is a reversed business model of giving razors free but making money on the blade. The latter proves it works, but there are not too many beneficial precedents for the former model.

Tesla, the car

Tesla is an electric car. The current model is about $80,000 (not a typo) and the new model will be about half that. It still has similar problems as the Volt except with one simple drive train. The problems are:

1.       The service stations are built for free charging after an initial fee. Are they really free?  It will be great for the owners if the company will not be bankrupted from its shaky financial state. Same for sending mechanics to your house to fix your car. I hope they will prosper as I cheer them from my cheap seat.

2.       The charging range for the average owner is far worse than the range under ideal conditions and it will never be close to the range of cars using gas. Is the extra cost for larger battery worth it to an average driver?

3.       The other problem is some states do not (or will not) allow selling a car there without a dealership. It is costly to build a dealership network.

4.       My estimate is $10,000 rebate per car sold by Tesla from the government. Will the government subsidize them forever? It is not a big deal now as the number of cars they are selling is still small.

5.       It will appeal to folks driving a lot of miles in a year and/or when the gas price surges. I drive about 8,000 miles a year and it will never pay back for the extra cost ($80,000 vs. $23,000 for my Honda CR-V). Hope the $40,000 Tesla would make a big difference.

6.       Even if the company is making easy money in selling the carbon credit, it will still have big losses in the coming years.

Musk

Musk is very brilliant in pumping up the stock. He will sell it without the restrictions in the loan after he paid it back to DOE. The last owners of this stock could be the biggest losers if it heads south. I could be wrong in the timing but not wrong in the fundamentals of the company.

I sincerely wish he and his company will be successful and I were wrong. Only time can tell. For my own money, I prefer to buy low and sell high. It is just me. If you want to buy high and sell higher, you should protect your investment with stop order. Also, adjust the stop when it appreciates.

Zucker & Chan

There have been many arguments against Zucker & Chan. I'm for the Zucker and I wish to be one. It is an inspiration to mankind.

If he asked me for advice (only 1000 shares of the FB's stock or showing his dumb smile), I would tell him to IPO in a foreign tax heaven. It is a case of saving pennies and losing pounds. Now, he has to give money either to the government in term of taxes or give it to charities. The difference: The government will use the majority of your money to kill (today in Middle East) and charities (if controlled) 99% on the needy.

Best Stocks for 2016

Another new book announcement. Best Stocks for 2016. It is about $10 for my research, cheaper than a good lunch. Hope it will perform as good as the last selection for 2014. It has far fewer stocks than the last one. They were selected by my better screens and sources that performed well recently and most if not all pass my subscription services. It is time sensitive. The weather man predicts the weather better for the next few days than next week.

As of today, the market is too risky to buy stocks. Postpone ordering this book until the market starts to recover.

Comments on today's financial news

* Oil and airline. When one is down, the other is up. However, in a few years, it will be reversed - my prediction. I was surprised I found so many airline stocks in my new book Best Stocks (just published today). I unloaded several and it may be time to buy some back.

* After a rise and now a fall, it is time to accuse China manipulating their currency. We have to blame others for our problems but ourselves. It is politics, honey.

* Again and again, China needs an organization similar to SEC to prevent cheats.

* I used Shutterbug's service. A $50 for a photo book is not cheap but it is a good coffee table book with my ugly face. Their free services such as creating website for my album is quite handy to send a link to my friends. However, it has to be improved as Facebook's Video Manager and Google's Picture are better choices.

* It looks like Germany would benefit from the Syrian refugees due to lacking working folks and folks not working on those cheap jobs. When it is too much of a good thing, it will not be good. Pray (or prey) for the refugees. Evey time I see old ladies pushed in the wheel chairs, I am sad. There is a Chinese saying: It is better to be a dog in peace time than a human being in war time.

Merry X'mas & Happy New Year

Taken in my backyard. The deer came earlier this year. If they let you shoot stranger in your backyard, why I can't shoot the deer?

Google Picture gathers the 3 trips and tells a better story.

You can do the same yourself. Use Facebook's Video Manager and select picture clip.
The 'story' is created by Google's Pictures.

Both have their good features. Facebook makes the pictures look like a movie clip with selected music. Google's has some nice features such as 'Day' and 'Place'. I will do both. The Facebook one can be sent to friends and the Google one does not display well on TV but nice on the PC.

Being green conscious, I recycle it every year. The second part is original. Have a good laugh.

No Nativity Scene?

I got a email from my potential congressman as follows:

The Supreme Court has ruled that there cannot be a Nativity Scene in the United States’ Capital this Christmas Season. This isn’t for any religious reason. They simply have not been able to find Three Wise Men in the Nation’s Capital. The Search for a Virgin continues. There was no problem, however, finding enough asses to fill the stable.

My reply:

Beg to differ. All congressmen including yourself are wise men if you compare your bank account before your term and after.

You can find a lot of virgins but you've to lower your age requirement or change the definition of a virgin. For definition, borrow the example from Clinton's no smoker policy: As long as you do not exhale, you're a non-smoker. Change the word 'exhale' with many words I can think of but they are not too polite to write them down here - just in case the naive Sister Teresa is reading my blog secretly.

It appears to be a fact that there are more mouths kissing asses than asses available to be kissed. Hence, we really have a shortage of asses.

New book: Best Stocks for 2016.
Recent article. May be a long while before the next one. Taking a break. It will worth the money ($0) to check how I find and research stocks. If you do not like the article, ask for a refund ($0). LOL.

Have a great day!

Gun control?

Gun control is not an issue in political debates for a long while. When can we send our children to school or watch a movie without the chance of being shot at? At least, enforce more checking and exclude all the semi automatic weapons. When we have one terrorist among a thousand of peaceful refugees, it is one too much.

I have so many negative comments from the gun lovers. Sorry open the can and let all the worms come out. Most do not make sense and the best argument is "Guns limit our population growth".  My counter-arguments are:

I understand all the arguments from gun lovers. The reality (wake-up call for many) is comparing other developed countries with their gun control and the gun shooting incidents - even with France. Besides terrorists, we have the mentally challenged and they have automatic weapons. Statistics never lie. I rest my case

Carrying guns was a necessity in the wild, wild west days. Not today. The Constitution has to be updated. Tell me which developed country beside us allows its citizens to bear arm without exhausive checking and strict regulations. None!

This will be the FIRST, real debate in this election as WE are all tired of the constant shooting. The 'contributions' from NRA and the gun manufacturers will be no meaning if the majority want to take out guns from easy circulation. The politicians have been counting their filthy contributions with hands dripping in blood for TOO long.

If everyone carries a gun, we will have double our shooting just by road rage alone. We should not enforce the law but let the police do their jobs.

Why all the mass shootings use automatic weapons - the ban cannot be effective?

Responses to today's financial news

* CI and AET are among my biggest winners in my taxable account. Will sell them early next year and look for the next winners. Big impact from Obamacare.

* With aging population, drug companies should look good, but not with my GILD that is barely profitable. CALM even fundamentally sound has about 50% short. Do not know why. Hope the rise of interest rate would make the shorters loose their shirts.

* Bought OIL yesterday. Will give it to my grand children for long-term hold. Every one is for himself in OPEC. Some wealthy folks may be looking for some tallest buildings to jump. That's why they build so many.

* Iran will be richer after the taking out the oil embargo. Plus, the modern day silk road will reach it all the way from China. I love their culture and people. They accept more to the Western culture than most in the region. We should not force other countries to follow our ideals and culture.
